Domestic air conditioning

Air conditioning for your home, explained

Everything you need to know before you buy, including how the same system can cool your home in summer and warm it in winter.

How it works

Two units, one neat pipe run

A home system has an indoor unit on the wall and a compact outdoor unit outside. They’re joined by a small pipe and cable run through the wall, usually hidden in a slim cover.

1

Indoor unit

Cools the room quietly from high on the wall.

2

Remote and app

Set the temperature, timer and modes.

3

Pipe run

One small hole, hidden in a slim cover.

4

Outdoor unit

Takes the heat away. Wall bracket or ground pad.

Sizing guide

What size do I need?

Air conditioning output is measured in kilowatts (kW). Bigger rooms, big windows and south-facing rooms need more. Here’s a rough guide.

System types

The right type of system for each room

Most popular

Wall-mounted split

The right choice for most homes. Slim, quiet and quick to fit, with one indoor unit linked to one outdoor unit.

Multi-split

One outdoor unit serving several indoor units. Neater outside the house and ideal for a few bedrooms.

Other options

Floor-standing and ducted systems for rooms where a wall unit won’t work. We’ll talk you through them at your survey.

Good to know

It heats too

Most systems we fit also run in reverse, gently heating a room on cooler days. Handy for spring and autumn evenings, and for garden offices all year.

Costs

What does it cost?

Single rooms start from £1,695 fitted, with 0% finance available. Every system is bespoke, so we confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey. Here’s what goes into it.

FAQs

Air conditioning questions

Many home installations don’t need it, but there are rules about where the outdoor unit can go, especially for flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We check this at your survey and tell you before you commit if permission is needed.

Modern indoor units are very quiet, and night modes run the fan at a whisper. We also position the outdoor unit to keep noise away from you and your neighbours.

Less than most people expect. A highly efficient bedroom unit costs up to about 13p an hour at full power at today’s energy price cap, and inverter units usually run below full power once the room is cool.

F-Gas rules cover the refrigerants used in air conditioning, and systems must be installed by certified engineers. All our engineers are REFCOM F-Gas certified, so your system is installed safely, legally and properly documented.

It depends on the brand and model. Some units carry up to 10 years’ manufacturer cover when the system is serviced every year. Every installation also comes with our own workmanship guarantee.
